There is some truth in the adage “Pay peanuts and you’ll get monkeys” and the same is true across most industries. This is not to say that you shouldn’t be financially prudent when selecting a service provider, but if dollars (Yen, Dong, Rupees etc) are your only consideration, then beware that what you feel you save initially may seep out in other ways.
Other than price, some other considerations which you should look out for can be:
How responsive they are – this one is a can of worms as every client is different so too are the degrees of communication they expect. However, as a practitioner may have several clients to service at once, the responsiveness may vary. You should find one with whom you are satisfied
How professional they are – this one is not only in relation to how professional they are with you as their customer, it also speaks volumes as to their dealing with their peers and colleagues
How transparent they are – this is very important as each transaction can be different so the amount of work may vary. An honest practitioner will generally be able to gauge how much effort is required with regards to your transaction and should incorporate it into their cost agreement with you or at the very least, update you when extra effort leading to more cost is required.
How willing to learn they are – in this day and age, everyday is definitely a school day and lessons can come in many shapes and forms. Whilst in the majority of cases, we educate our clients while guiding them through their transaction, a practitioner must always be open to the idea that they do not know everything (or haven’t Google’d everything) and that you as a customer may provide them with an opportunity to learn something new. Some practitioners may respond defensively when questioned about “something I heard from my friends”.
This list is in no way exhaustive.
A good conveyancer will usually come recommended and in fact, this is the way most great businesses make traction. A flashy ad, great SEO and a fancy social media presence may indicate great marketing, but marketing alone is something superficial at best. We recommend you contact the company and ask some probing questions to gauge the best fit for you. Another thing to note is that we believe that every experience is Uneek and as such, every service provider may not be the best fit for you.
A licensed conveyancer should have a license which you can look upon the relevant state Government website (this would be Fair Trading for NSW). If you are using a Lawyer/Solicitor, then your place to check would be the relevant Law Society of the state in which the property is located. Other than it being a legal requirement, a valid license also ensures that your practitioner will have the relevant insurance cover in the event the transaction does not go as planned.
